This month’s Program: Prabháta Samgiita Program

Join us for Iowa City author Andy Douglas (Alok) as he reads from:

Songs of the New Dawn: Selected song-poems of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar.

"Andy Douglas's stirring 'transpirations' echo a world of transcendental beauty. These poems bring to an English-speaking audience some of the 5018 Bengali songs composed by Shrii Prabhát Ranjan Sarkar between 1982 and 1990, songs that came to be known as Prabháta Samgiita, Songs of a New Dawn. An extraordinary spiritual master, Shrii Sarkar once defined mysticism as 'the never-ending endeavor to find a link between the finite and the infinite.' Each song glows with this spirit of ceaseless search, and Douglas's renditions beautifully capture the delicacy of feeling and simplicity of the original Bengali."

- Dr. Ayesha Irani, Assoc Prof of Asian Studies, UMass Boston

Andy Douglas is a writer and musician, and has been a student of P R Sarkar's teachings for 40 years. He holds an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from University of Iowa. He is the author of The Curve of the World: Into the Spiritual Heart of Yoga, and Redemption Songs: A Year in the Life of a Community Prison Choir.

PROUT’s Ecological Views

PROUT’s Ecological Views

Instructor: Ac. Ravi Logan

Course details: 90 minute class

Class description: A comprehensive social theory must address all aspects of social life. Traditionally, this has included economics, governance, culture, social life, and historical development. Many social thinkers recognize that an additional area of concern needs to be included – that of ecology. A proper ecological philosophy can explain humanity’s proper relationship with the natural world and give solutions to our destructive impact on the earth.

PROUT’s value base is neohumanism which holds a reverence for all life. Neohumanism provides a deep cure to environmental destruction, but there is need to work out its practical expression in certain arenas. This class will examine PROUT’s position on the following questions:

• What is a proper approach to preservation of wilderness? How should the wilderness be utilized? Can humans live in harmony with wilderness?

• How should population growth be dealt with?

• What moral scope do humans have to use animals with developed minds for food, clothing and medicine?

• What constraints should be placed on patterns of consumption? And how?

• How can technological development be compatible with environmental health?

• How can there be an approach to development that sustainably maintains ecosystems for future generations?

• To what extent should humanity be concerned with protecting biodiversity?

• Can the environment be fully protected without changing the economic system?

Cost: Sliding scale $15 - $40
